About Cadrien

Cadrien is the sun-realm of the Ambrai, grown around Syrandora, the colossal amber World Tree that rises from the sea at its heart. The tree weeps Solari, the golden sap that runs in Ambrai veins in place of blood and is their only true sustenance. To live in Cadrien is to live bound to the tree, sunlit and mortal, in a realm that has made joy itself a form of worship.

The Ambrai keep no throne and no houses. They drift by resonance into one of the Twelve Harmonies, the twelve paths of rapture that order all of Cadrien. The realm is governed only when all Twelve gather at Aurenthal, the platform that circles Syrandora's trunk. Their capital, Syr'Kareth, is a vertical city grown into the living wood, twelve districts of light and music rising through the branches.

Death in Cadrien is not an ending. Through the gift of Solari the Ambrai soul-walk into Aurenmara, the soul realm the tree sustains. Their dead pass into it to join the drifting chorus of the Solenaar, and Syra, the empress who is Syrandora's own form within that realm, reigns there. Against any threat from beyond its shores stands the Aurenkaar, who strike from the soul realm itself. Syrandora is the heart of it all, the source of Cadrien's life and the witness to its every age.

About Cadrien

Geography

Cadrien is the sun-realm of the Ambrai, shaped in every part by Syrandora, the living amber World Tree that rises from the Cadrian Sea at its heart. Its boughs, its roots and its golden sap reach into every corner of the land.

01

The Syrandora Canopy

The vast boughs of Syrandora spread across the sky. The golden light that falls through its amber leaves touches everything below. High in the canopy grows Syr'Kareth, the capital, its twelve Skyblooms built into the living trunk and limbs. Around the great trunk circles Aurenthal, the floating platform where the Twelve Harmonies gather to decide the matters of the whole realm.

02

The Cadrian Sea

At the heart of Cadrien lies the Cadrian Sea, a sunlit expanse of amber water ringed by cliffs and jungle, from which Syrandora itself rises. It was born in the Rise, when the tree surged upward and shattered the old golden Vale into a sea. Along its shores stand the great harbours, where ships of a dozen realms come to trade for Solari. Here Cadrien meets the wider world.

03

The Verdelen Gladelands

Between the coast and the deep groves lie the Verdelen Gladelands, rolling meadows and flowered glades that are the gentlest country in Cadrien. They are the last echo of the Cadrian Vale, the endless field of golden bloom that was the realm's heart before the Rise. Here lie the groves, the farms and the quiet settlements where much of the realm makes its home.

04

The Golden Heights

Where the land climbs toward the sun, cliff-cities of amber and living stone rise along the heights above the sea. From these high places the Ambrai look out over the water and the approaches to the realm. It is along these shores and heights that the Aurenkaar keep their watch, guarding Cadrien against any threat that comes from beyond.

05

The Roots' Depths

Beneath all of Cadrien run the roots of Syrandora, a vast network that reaches into every corner of the land and binds the whole realm to the tree. Through them the Solari wells up toward the surface. At the very edge of the realm the roots reach the Sorne, the great falls on the border with Myrien. There they rise into the open air at Sylvandor, where the living roots of Syrandora cradle the dead roots of Myrien's own fallen tree.

06

The Sorne and the Open Shore

Cadrien keeps no walls and hides behind no veil. To one side it opens to the sea and the ships of the world that come for its sap. To the other it borders Myrien at the Sorne, the great waterfall where the shared cities stand and the two peoples meet as kin. What guards Cadrien is the Aurenkaar, rather than any wall or spell. They need nothing more to keep the realm safe.

People & Culture

A people who made joy their worship and death a homecoming.

01

The Ambrai

The Ambrai are the elven people of Cadrien, sun-touched and bound to Syrandora. They are kin to the Vyssari of Myrien, sun to that people's moon, yet a lifetime beneath the amber World Tree has made them a people wholly their own.

02

The Acorn Myth

Ambrai tradition says the first of their kind were born from Syrandora's fallen acorns. It is not true, for no single tree made either elven people, yet the Ambrai cherish the story all the same. What binds them to the tree was never a matter of origin. It is the sap that runs in their veins.

03

Solari in the Blood

Syrandora weeps an amber sap called Solari. In the Ambrai it runs in place of blood. It is their only true sustenance, warms their copper-gold colouring and lights the veins faintly beneath the skin. It is also the source of every gift that sets them apart from the other peoples of the world.

04

The Parted Soul

By the gift of Solari, an Ambrai can loose the soul from the body and walk unseen through the living world. The same gift opens the deeper road, the passage into Aurenmara, the soul realm that Syrandora sustains. To soul-walk is the birthright of every Ambrai. It is why they alone, of all the peoples of the world, are never truly bound to the flesh.

05

Sennari

Like their Vyssari kin, the Ambrai are born with sennari, the elven sense that lets them speak mind to mind without words and hear tones no other ear can catch. Joined to soul-walking, it lets a single Ambrai range far from the body unseen and still carry word home across the distance. Few peoples can keep a secret from them.

06

Kin, Mortality and Reputation

The Ambrai are the sun to the Vyssari's moon, the closest of kin and the closest of allies, though their gifts leave many other peoples uneasy. Like all elves they are mortal, living a long span and then passing on. To the world beyond Cadrien they are beheld with wonder and a little fear, a people whose blood is sap, who walk unseen and who slip the bounds of the body as no one else can.

The Twelve Harmonies

The Paths of Resonance

From the heart of Syrandora flow twelve ways of living and of returning. The Harmonies are how the Ambrai move through the world and how they pass beyond it.

01

The Twelve Harmonies

Twelve traditions order all of Cadrien, each devoted to one aspect of existence: flame, stillness, sound, motion, memory, mystery and the rest. Each is at once a way of life, a form of worship and a door into Aurenmara.

02

A Path of Resonance

A Harmony is found by resonance rather than birth. An Ambrai drifts until one path calls like home, in study or song or feeling or awe. To change paths is possible yet rare, for the truest resonance puts down deep roots.

03

Rapture and Release

Each Harmony has its own rapture and its own rite, and each is a way of loosing the soul from the body. Carried to its height, the rapture opens the path into Aurenmara, so that a dancer of the Flame and a contemplative of the Stillness reach the same soul realm by wholly different doors.

04

Governance

Cadrien has no king and no central state. Each Harmony governs itself, in its own customs and halls. When the realm must speak as one, the Twelve gather as equals at Aurenthal, the platform that circles the trunk of Syrandora.

05

The Skyblooms

Each Harmony keeps its own district within Syrandora, called a Skybloom, grown into the trunk or the boughs and shaped to its particular rapture. In a Skybloom the living wood, daily life and worship are one and the same.

06

The One Chorus

The Harmonies divide the Ambrai only in the living world. In Aurenmara those divisions fall away. Every soul joins the Solenaar in the One Chorus, many voices sounding as a single song.

Settlements

Cities of the Living Tree

From the heights of Syr'Kareth to the quiet meadows of the Gladelands, the Ambrai dwell within the living wood of Syrandora and along the amber sea that cradles her roots.

01

Syr'Kareth

The capital, grown within the living trunk and boughs of Syrandora. Halls and sanctuaries are hollowed from amber-wood, spiraling skyward through root-bridges and terraces. Music and celebration fill every level, and the Solari within the wood lights each golden vein.

02

The Skyblooms

Twelve districts, twelve Harmonies, each with its own mood and expression: fierce and flame-lit, hushed and shadowed, opulent, musical, wild, graceful and more. All are bound together in the living embrace of the tree.

03

Aurenthal

A vast ring-platform of grown amber and light that encircles Syrandora high above the city. Twelve equal places ring the open heart where the tree ascends, a seat of council, rite and celebration open to sky and wind.

04

The Cadrian Sea Harbours

Sunlit ports along the amber sea where distant ships dock and Solari is traded. Grown quays and cranes hum with work, and Ambrai mingle with visitors from a dozen realms in markets rich with goods, stories and song.

05

The Golden Heights

Cliff-cities of amber and pale living stone rise above the coast. Terraces, watch-posts and shrines cling to the sheer heights, keeping long, clear vigil over the sea and the approaches to the realm.

06

The Gladeland Settlements

Hamlets and groves in the gentle countryside. Homes grown from living wood, orchard gardens, flowered meadows and singing streams make this a country of peace, craft and harvest, where daily life runs slow and warm.

07

Syr'Sorne

The border city above the great waterfall chasm. The amber towers of Cadrien face the silver halls of Vai'Sorne across the divide, kin in spirit and parted in fate, joined by trade and old memory and the slow grief of Myrien's fading.

Landmarks

Sacred Wonders of the Amber Realm

Cadrien is shaped by living wood and weeping light. Its wonders are felt as much as seen, echoes of creation and sacrifice and kinship that endure in beauty and in sorrow across the whole realm.

01

Syrandora, the World Tree

The colossal heart of Cadrien and the soul of the Ambrai. Syrandora's canopy is a second sky, and its roots run through the whole realm to reach the far border with Myrien. From its living bark weeps the golden Solari that is the lifeblood of the land.

02

The Cadrian Sea

A vast sea born of Syrandora's Rise, its amber waters lit from within by the Solari. Ringed by radiant forests and sheer cliffs, it is at once the cradle of the realm and its scar.

03

The Sorne

The endless falls that both divide and join. At the border with Myrien the Sorne drops into bottomless mist, and cities cling to its edges where the sun-realm and the moon-realm meet.

04

Sylvandor

Where the living roots of Syrandora reach across the water to cradle the dead roots of Myriandor. A bond of kinship and grief, amber light holding silver sorrow.

05

Aurenmara, the Soul Realm

Beyond flesh and stone lies the realm of souls and song. Here the spirit-lights of the Solenaar drift in endless currents, moving as one chorus through boundless radiance.

06

The Roots' Depths

Far beneath the surface, Syrandora's roots thread vast caverns of living amber. Wells of Solari glow in crystal pools, and the golden light of the tree reaches even here.

07

The Cadrian Vale

The remembered heartland, drowned yet unforgotten. Once an endless field of golden bloom, it is the paradise the Rise cost the realm, kept alive now only in memory and in the flowered gladelands that remain.
