Acorn Myth

The Vyssari founding belief that the first of their people were born from the fallen acorns of Myriandor, the World Tree of Myrien. It is sacred to them and central to how they understand themselves, though in truth no tree gave the elves life.

A crown without steel is ornament

A saying of House Thaldrazan, holding that no title or law means anything without the force to uphold it.

Ambrai

The sun-touched elves of Cadrien, the people of the living World Tree Syrandora. Mortal and warm-hued, they carry Solari in their veins in place of blood, soul-walk into Aurenmara and drift by resonance into one of the Twelve Harmonies. They are the kin of Myrien's moon-touched Vyssari.

Antler Hills

The Antler Hills are a rugged, wind-scarred highland region on the western frontier of the Skarnn lands, the homeland of Clan Stoltengard and the source of the clan's antler emblem. Their cold, exposed slopes and narrow passes make them natural fortress country, and Stoltengard Keep is carved directly into their eastern cliffs.

Antler Oath

The Antler Oath is the binding pledge of Clan Stoltengard, sworn by carving the clan's antler sigil into one's weapon as a vow to defend Stoltengard lands and uphold its law. Breaking the oath is punished by permanent exile.

Anvil-Father

A title of Khoran, the Creator of Form, as worshipped by the Khazal: the god who struck the world into being with his hammer. The Hammer Verses are revered as his revealed word, and dwarven oaths and prayers are addressed to him by this name.

Arcana Matrix

The Arcana Matrix is the registry of mages kept by Altarra Tower, which records every known practitioner in the Empire. It detects new magic by sensing fluctuations in a person's connection to the Roil, so that no talent rises unseen.

Arcana Memorandum

The Arcana Memorandum was the decree of the Sartan Empire that claimed all magical relics, artifacts, forbidden texts, and advanced arcane knowledge as imperial property. Issued during the Fracturing of the Sartan Order, it dissolved independent mage guilds, seized archives, and drove the most dangerous arcane knowledge into secrecy, teaching dissidents how to survive outside imperial sight.

Arcanum

A rare green-glowing ore mined deep beneath the Elderspine, chiefly at Baraz-Darak-Zulfbar, and the foundation of that city's wealth. Refined and exported across Arkanthys, even to the arcane realm of Cadrien, it is controlled through the Arcanum Registry, and the Ember Throne itself is said to be forged from arcanum and gold.

Arcanum Cannon

An arcanum cannon is a piece of Khazural-made arcane artillery, powered by arcanum and mounted upon the walls of the Black Citadel. It is the Ordo Obscurum's chief weapon against the aerial horrors of the Fallen.

Arcanum Registry

The system by which every unit of arcanum is catalogued, tested, and recorded at Baraz-Darak-Zulfbar before it may leave the city, the mechanism through which the trade-city controls the realm's most valuable resource.

Ash Remembrances

The ceremonial markings of House Thaldrazan, the powdered remains of failed ancestors worn upon the brow as proof that failure itself carries worth if endured.

Ashvaults

The great sealed vaults beneath Khazural where dangerous, sacred, and cursed relics are contained, kept by House Thaldrazan. Though the house guards them as stewards, their ownership was seized by the crown under High King Baelgrim Drakk II and they remain under the authority of the Ember Throne.

Astralore

The sanctum of Caelari stargazers at Vai'Luthra that holds the realm's celestial archives, entered only by the Caelari.

Aurenkaar

Meaning those who come from the soul realm, the sacred order of guardians sworn to defend Syrandora and Cadrien from external threats. By Syra's gift each Aurenkaar strikes from within Aurenmara into the physical world and withdraws beyond reach, a power mastered only over decades. A handful of them is the most feared force in Arkanthys.

Aurenmara

The soul realm of Cadrien, a real and persistent world projected and sustained by Syrandora. The Ambrai reach it by soul-walking. Their dead remain within it forever as the Solenaar.

Aurenthal

The great floating platform that circles the trunk of Syrandora at the heart of Syr'Kareth. It is the one common ground of Cadrien, where the Twelve Harmonies gather and vote as equals when a matter concerns the whole realm.

Beacon of Sul

The crimson magical flame at the summit of Baraz-Darak-Sul, sustained by ancient runes and bound-ember enchantments and unbroken for over seven centuries, both a signal and a symbol of the northern watch that has never failed.

Binding Ceremony

The initiation rite of House Rhund-Khazal, in which an initiate is chained to an oath-stone through a full night and made to recount every debt, promise, and obligation they bear.

Bloomfall

The shedding of Syrandora's golden petals, when they fall in a slow rain through the levels of Syr'Kareth. It is a sacred season in Cadrien, marked by feasts and rites among the Harmonies.

Bonded Companies

The Thalanir war-units of Myrien, each bound through sennari into a single fighting mind that moves and strikes as one.

Bulwark

The colossal wall raised by House Dornbraeth across Khazural's southern passes against the Valiran Empire, the greatest dwarven defensive work ever built. No mortal army ever breached it; it was shattered only in the cataclysm of the Godwar, and its ruins now lie south of Baraz-Darak-Hirn.

Burning of Myriandor

The Kashari attack during the war with Kashar that burned Myriandor, the World Tree of Myrien, killing it beyond any restoration. The Vyssari hold it an unforgivable sacrilege, and it turned Kashar's rebellion into a permanent break that has never healed.

Cadrian Sea

The sunlit sea at the heart of Cadrien, ringed by cliffs and jungle, from which Syrandora rises. It was formed when the Rise of Syrandora shattered and drowned the Cadrian Vale.

Cadrian Vale

The field of endless golden bloom that was the heart of Cadrien in an earlier age. It was shattered and largely drowned when Syrandora rose during the Godwar, leaving the Cadrian Sea in its place.

Caelari

The Myrien caste of oracles and stargazers. The High Oracles of the Caelari govern the realm from Vai'Luthra.

Calamity-beast

Calamity-beast is the term Drakkar uses for the apex and existential-threat creatures it alone is summoned to hunt: dragons, frost-wyrms, primordial predators, and other beasts against which courage and numbers are not enough. To summon Drakkar is to admit a threat has exceeded all ordinary means of response.

Cantor

A reader of the Hammer Verses, charged with reciting the scripture aloud in Deepcant within the Hammerholds. It is the Cantor's voice that wakes the carved rune-lines to their faint glow, and only the trained may speak the Verses without error.

Chain-Marks

The ceremonial tattoos of House Rhund-Khazal, marking the oaths a member has kept and broken across their life.

Cinderbrand

The Cinderbrand is the burning wound that the Pale Crown seared into Gabriel Aurellian when he took up its burden, proof that the Crown was never meant for mortal flesh, and the mark by which all Aurellian succession is decided. It follows neither birth order nor ordinary inheritance: it appears only upon one of Aurellian blood, whether at birth or late in life, and the throne answers to whoever bears it. As of 4A 502 the Cinderbrand has not reappeared since the death of the last emperor, and the empire continues under regency, waiting to learn whether the mark will return.

Coldvein

Coldvein is the axe of Jarl Barl Grimwulf, forged about the heartstone of a frost giant and perpetually, unnaturally cold, numbing the skin even near open flame. It is a weapon of office rather than ceremony, the blade the Jarl carries in his own hand.

Commutatio Muneris

Commutatio Muneris is the legal conversion of one levy obligation into another. A Domus may, with approval, fulfill part of its Munus Sigilli through coin instead of soldiers, supplies instead of coin, road service instead of manpower, or another accepted form of service.

Concessio Sigilli

Concessio Sigilli is the permanent imperial grant or recognition of a Seal to a Domus. It may formalize inheritance, reward service, resolve succession, replace a fallen ruler, or confirm control over a restored territory.

Confirmatio Sigilli

Confirmatio Sigilli is the imperial registration of a new Sigillar after succession. It does not normally allow the Empire to choose the ruler of a Seal. Succession belongs to the Domus by hereditary right. Confirmatio Sigilli records and acknowledges the lawful heir, unless the succession is disputed, defective, forged, treasonous or otherwise unlawful.

Council of Guilds

The governing body of Baraz-Darak-Zulfbar, composed of the city's most powerful guildmasters, refinery overseers, and trade authorities, who rule through structured deliberation. Though formally independent, it operates under the dominant influence of House Brimgaruun.

Crimson Scar

The open, burned wasteland before Vael'Vordath that any force out of Kashar must cross in full view of the fortress. The city's first line of defense.

Crown Seal

A Crown Seal is the common term for a Sigillum Imperii. It refers to a Seal retained under direct imperial ownership and excluded from noble inheritance.

Custodia Sigilli

Custodia Sigilli is temporary custody of a Seal. It may be imposed when succession is disputed, a Domus fails its obligations, a Seal collapses into disorder, or imperial authority temporarily takes control until lawful governance is restored.

Deepcant

The spoken sacred language of the Stonebound, the voiced form of the Deep Rhythm itself. Owing to the order's vow of silence it is almost never heard, and when a Wordbound speaks it, the faithful say even stone listens.

Deepforge Script

The written sacred language of the Deep Rhythm, a script of deep geometric runes held to be remnants of Khoran's imprint upon the world, discovered and sanctified by the Ungi long after creation. The Hammer Verses are engraved in it.

Deepmetal

A dense, dark metal found only in the deepest places, notoriously difficult to work. Nearly every vein is fouled with impurities and lesser materials that ruin it for forging, and only the rarest fragments can be refined for use at all. Properly worked, it is near unbreakable and slowly mends its own damage, but the skill and cost required are so immense that to forge even a single suit of armor from it would beggar an empire. The Hammer Verses are the only object ever successfully made from it.

Deep Rhythm

The Deep Rhythm, known among the dwarves as the Song in the Stone, is the primordial pulse believed to run through all stone, metal, and living earth, the foundational cadence by which mountains rise and the deep places endure. It is not a deity and is never prayed to or petitioned; instead it is acknowledged, studied, and obeyed. To work stone well, forge true metal, and preserve proper order is to live in harmony with the Rhythm, and dwarven faith holds that dwarves are not children of the gods but children of the Rhythm and the world itself. Its priesthood is the Stonebound.

Deeproots

The Deeproots are the vast and ancient subterranean structures that lie beneath the Elderspine, older than any known civilization and never fully mapped. Their geometry is impossibly precise and their metal-veins arranged with deliberate purpose, and the Ungi hold them sacred as the deepest surviving imprint of the Creator Khoran. In the present age they are home to the Durazhul, the Deep Dwarves, and it was by delving them that the Ungi first came upon the Engine that would become the heart of Bharûm-Drakhal.

Deepward Gate

A name for Baraz-Darak-Uzul, the hold that guards the eastern threshold into the Deeproots and the Mourning Gate that lies beyond it.

Defectio Muneris

Defectio Muneris is the failure of a Domus Sigillata to fulfill the Munus Sigilli owed by its Seal. It may result in fines, audits, increased obligations, suspension of privileges, imperial custody, revocation of rights, or political punishment.

Domus

A Domus is a legally recognized noble family of the Aurellian Empire. The term replaces the common idea of a noble “house” and refers to a bloodline, its estates, its legal rights, its inheritance claims, and its political standing. Plural: Domii.

Domus Interitus

Domus Interitus is the total extermination of a noble Domus, the destruction of its name and bloodline root and branch. It is the gravest fate that can befall a Domus, beyond the lawful reduction of Excidium Domus. It is what awaits a Domus that rises against the throne and fails.

Domus Sigillata

A Domus Sigillata is a Domus that owns and governs a Seal by hereditary right. A Domus Sigillata has the right to tax, judge, build, fortify, administer, raise levies, grant local privileges, and pass the Seal through succession. Its authority exists within imperial law, but the Seal itself belongs to the Domus. Plural: Domii Sigillati.

Do not follow the voices in the Needles

A warning Ravenholders give to travelers bound near the dead forest of the Needles, where the grief of its fallen spirit is said to linger.

dur

dur is a Kashari naming particle meaning worker of or belonging to. It links a person's name to the branch of Kashari life they serve, as in dur Savrun, of the Water branch. It derives from an old root meaning deep.

Dûrvund

The Khazal true-name for the Stone Pact, the Deep Oath sworn in the First Hallings that binds the holds, Forgehouses, and crown into one realm and charges the dwarves with the eternal watch over the world's thresholds. From dûr, the deep, and vund, a sworn binding.

Echo Flame

The crystalline beacon atop the Watchspire of Thal'Valeth that gives psionic light without fire.

Echo of Bond

The principle of gravity, burden, and obligation, embodied by House Rhund-Khazal. It is the weight that binds oath to keeper and holds all things to their place, the metaphysical root from which law, contract, and sworn duty draw their force.

Echo of Consequence

The principle that every action bears cost and every exchange yields return, embodied by House Brimgaruun. It holds that nothing is given freely, that each strike upon creation draws its answer, and that debt and consequence are woven into reality itself.

Echo of Endurance

The principle of time, trial, and transformation through pressure, embodied by House Thaldrazan. It teaches that worth is forged only through hardship and that whatever cannot withstand trial deserves to break. It governs erosion, the slow testing of relics, and the faith that strength is the residue of suffering survived.

Echo of Persistence

The principle of memory, legacy, and remembrance, embodied by House Zarak-Vorr. It holds that what is remembered remains and what is forgotten was never, making memory the truest form of survival. It governs lineage, record, and the conviction that to be preserved in memory is to endure beyond death.

Echo of Shape

The principle of structure, form, and deliberate creation, embodied by House Dornbraeth. It holds that to give a thing form is to give it permanence and power, and that those who will not shape the world are doomed to be shaped by it. Of the Five Echoes it is considered the most foundational, the truth on which the others stand.

Edrisfari

The Edrisfari are the Fenni riders of Fennmark, both the word for a single rider and the name of the great order they form. Trained at Kar Edris and melded each to one Fenni for life, they are the elite cavalry that crowns Fennmark's armies.

Elderspine

The Elderspine is the great mountain range that forms the backbone of Khazural, stretching from the far north toward the eastern reaches of the continent. It is one of the Five Sacred Scars, the deepest surviving imprint of the Creator Khoran, where structure first overcame the chaos of the Roil with force enough to remain. Beneath it lie the Deeproots, and within its depths the Stonebound priesthood guards the Hammer Verses.

Elevatio Domus

Elevatio Domus is the formal imperial recognition of a Lesser Domus as a High Domus. High and Lesser Domii hold the same rights in law, so the act confirms power a family already commands rather than granting it new authority. It follows extraordinary service, sustained wealth, political necessity, marriage consolidation, the replacement of a fallen Domus or imperial reward.

Ember Crown

The crown of the High King of Khazural and the symbol whose claim determines the throne. Should it be left unclaimed, only the Five Great Forgehouses hold the right to contest the succession.

Emberguard

The elite force sworn to defend the High King, operating exclusively within Baraz-Kronn.

Embermint

The royal treasury of Khazural, controlled by the High King, through which the wealth of the realm is coined and held. Even House Brimgaruun, master of all trade, holds no direct authority over it.

Ember Throne

The sacred seat of the High King, forged from arcanum and gold by Harrek the Forgefather in the First Hallings and one of the oldest surviving relics of that age. It stands at the heart of Baraz-Kronn and serves as both the seat of sovereignty and the supreme oathstone of the realm, before which every Ungi swears loyalty to Khazural.

Endless Contest

The perpetual rivalry among the Five Great Forgehouses to stand above one another, regarded not as a flaw but as the engine of dwarven society. The Khazal hold that they need no outside enemy, for they are forged against one another in an unbroken struggle for power that runs in the blood of every house.

Everflame

The Everflame is the great fire kept burning at the heart of Bleakmarsh Fortress by the Ordo Servitus, said to have burned without fail since the end of the Godwar. It is at once a spiritual symbol of the endurance of truth and duty, a memorial to the fallen northern kingdoms, and a navigational beacon for those lost in the surrounding marsh. The order's brothers are trained from initiation to rekindle it should it ever falter, though they hold that it never has.

Excidium Domus

Excidium Domus is the formal fall, reduction, or stripping of a noble Domus. It may reduce a High Domus to lesser status, remove rights, break claims, or mark the family as fallen under imperial law.

Eyes of the Sky

The Eyes of the Sky are the ancient star-plates of Cloudwatch, polished obsidian charts inscribed with constellations no longer present in the modern sky. Those that remain intact still glow faintly in darkness, and they are said to resonate with those touched by divine or cosmic influence, waking to whisper fragmented visions and paths not yet walked. They cannot be commanded; they choose when to speak.

Factor

A Factor is a senior officer of Heavy Coin, Ravenhold's wealth-broker guild, each overseeing a major branch of its operations, from relic valuation and expedition finance to contract arbitration and market oversight. The Factors govern the guild as a council, though Belloc Ardane, the longest-serving and most heavily leveraged among them, sits at its center and sets its direction.

Fallen Domus

A Fallen Domus is a noble family that has lost legal recognition, rank, Seal ownership, or imperial standing. Such families may still possess blood claims, old estates, supporters, and political memory, but their lawful authority has been broken.

Fenni

The Fenni are the war-steeds of Fennmark, great predatory-eyed beasts found nowhere else in the world. A herd shares one mind. Each bonds to a single rider for life through the Meld, carrying the blind riders of Fennmark into battle.

First Hallings

The earliest foundational age of Khazural, when the Five Forgehouses arose in alignment with the Five Echoes, Harrek the Forgefather forged the Ember Throne and founded the monarchy, and the first great holds were carved. No Forgehouse has been recognized since.

First Murderer

First Murderer is the title remembered for the first serial killer recorded in the history of the Sartan Empire, the earliest perpetrator of murder committed as a deliberate pattern rather than a single act. The crime was unprecedented enough that the empire raised the Ocularis, its most secure prison-fortress, to contain the one who bore the name, and it was for that prisoner that the soul-shard method of imprisonment was first devised.

Five Echoes

The five foundational principles of dwarven cosmology, believed to structure existence itself as expressions of the Deep Rhythm: Shape, Bond, Endurance, Consequence, and Persistence. Each of the Five Great Forgehouses is bound to one Echo, and tradition holds that no new Forgehouse can arise unless a new Echo is revealed.

Five-Year Law

The law of Vai'Sorne by which leadership of the shared city passes between Myrien and Cadrien every five years.

Fjölkunnir

The Fjölkunnir are the magic-workers of the Skarnn, the keepers of a northern arcane tradition built on storm-binding, weather-craft, frost-runes, and rune lore passed down within the clans rather than taught in any tower. Their work is practical and martial, woven into war-bands and the warding of holds against the killing cold. True Fjölkunnir are rare and the most powerful rarer still; the most famous, Stigr Holgata of Clan Grimwulf, became the only Skarnn ever to rise to Archmage of Altarra Tower.

Flow Table

The Flow Table is a great slab of black stone in the central square of Ushk Nasseth on which the Congress inscribes its daily water directives. It records which districts will receive more water, which will receive less and which wells will be opened or sealed. In the water-city the law is water, written in stone.

Forgefather

The title of Harrek, first High King and unifier of the Khazal clans, who forged the Ember Throne and founded centralized dwarven rule in the First Hallings. Revered as the single greatest figure in Khazal history, his name is invoked in oaths, ceremony, and the battle cry "For the Forgefather." The reigning monarch is held to be the living continuation of his office.

Forgehouse

A Forgehouse is a hereditary dwarven industrial dynasty, functioning simultaneously as a noble house, an economic power, a political bloc, and a cultural institution. Every Khazal belongs to a Forgehouse, whether by birth, adoption, patronage, or earned induction, and the affiliation shapes nearly every aspect of life, including profession, political allegiance, marriage prospects, and social standing. Forgehouses govern labor and identity throughout Khazural, and above all of them stands the High King.

For the Forgefather

The battle cry of Khazural's soldiers, invoking Harrek the Forgefather and the enduring authority of the throne he created.

From the cold they rose, and to the cold they return

A Skarnn saying spoken at the Last Vigil over the dead, expressing the belief that the people are born of the harsh north and return to it in death.

Frostmaw

The Frostmaw is a great and dangerous boar of Grimhold, fierce enough that a hunt against one can scar even a seasoned warrior for life. It is the kind of formidable but natural beast the Skarnn clans face on their own, far below the calamity-beasts that only Drakkar will hunt.

Frost-wyrm

The frost-wyrm is a calamity-class serpent of the frozen north, counted among the apex monsters whose destruction lies beyond ordinary warriors. Such creatures were among the ancient prey of Drakkar, the hunter-order founded to face the threats no clan war-band could answer.

Gilded Halls

A name for Baraz-Kronn, the subterranean capital of Khazural, for the gold-veined splendor of its halls beneath the Sky Below. The seat of the High King and the anchor of the Dûrvund.

Golden Vein

A name for Baraz-Darak-Zulfbar, the trade-city of Khazural, for the arcanum wealth drawn from the mines beneath it and the gold it pulls in from across Arkanthys.

Gold Ledger

The Gold Ledger is Heavy Coin's master registry of significant transactions, debts, contracts, relic certifications, and trade declarations in Ravenhold. To be entered upon it is to be recognized under the city's commercial law; to be struck from it is economic death, for it governs access to credit, storage, harbor priority, and transport.

Grand Seer

The Grand Seer was the single supreme authority over Oculus, the intelligence and enforcement agency of the Sartan Empire. The office was deliberately anonymized: the Grand Seer's identity was concealed from all but the highest echelons of the Pantheon and the empire's ruling houses, and the public never knew whether one had changed, died, or been replaced, so that the title itself seemed eternal.

Grimhold Basin

The Grimhold Basin is the broad lowland region surrounding Ravenhold in the southeast of Grimhold, a junction for both regional and long-distance trade. The Blackram contend with the threats that move through it, and it forms one bound of Ravenhold's position between basin and sea.

Hammerholds

The temple-fortresses hidden within the Elderspine where the Hammer Verses are kept, guarded by the Khazal Stonebound and tended by Cantors. Half shrine and half stronghold, each holds slabs of inscribed deepmetal too heavy and too sacred to move.

Hammer Verses

The holiest scripture of the Deep Rhythm, revered by the Khazal as the revealed word of Khoran the Anvil-Father, who is said to have struck the world into being. Engraved in Deepforge Script upon slabs of deepmetal and kept by the Stonebound, the verses recount creation as the blows of Khoran's hammer and are the source from which the Five Echoes are understood.

Harmonies

The social structure of Cadrien, ordered into twelve Harmonies, the Ambrai counterpart to Myrien's castes.

Heartgear

The Heartgear was the colossal engine at the center of Bharûm-Drakhal, built by the Ungi around the Shard of Pyrrhex. It converted the shard's primordial fire into mechanical and thermal output, driving the machine-city's systems and feeding heat through subterranean channels to sustain the warm Sartan oasis above. No machine of comparable scale has ever existed; when it was destroyed and the Shard shattered during the Godwar, the oasis froze and Grimhold lost its last warm country.

Heartwood

The Heartwood is the ancient tree at the center of the dead forest called the Needles. To it the Nature Spirit of Balance bound the soul of Thirion, the Crystal Stag, in punishment for the destruction of his own woodland, and from that binding the curse of the Needles spread outward. In the present age the Heartwood has been purified and Thirion freed, and it now stands as the one living remnant of the old forest, the fragile heart from which new life slowly returns.

High Domus

A High Domus is one of the great noble Domii of the Aurellian Empire. High Domii usually control wealthy, old, strategic, or politically important Seals and possess greater influence among the nobility. Plural: High Domii.

High Electress

The High Electress is the supreme spiritual and judicial authority of the Elegy, and through it the highest spiritual power in Grimhold. She presides over the order's temples, courts, and inquisitors, sets its doctrine, and pronounces the rites of condemnation and absolution that determine whether a person, family, or object may remain within accepted Skarnn life. The current High Electress is Sif Helmarr, whose authority is bound to the enforcement wielded by Stenn Helmarr.

High King

The supreme sovereign of Khazural and the highest political, military, and executive authority of the dwarven realm, seated upon the Ember Throne at Baraz-Kronn. The office stands above all Forgehouses and was established in the First Hallings by Harrek the Forgefather. A reigning queen holds the same office as High Queen.

High Oracles

The Caelari rulers of Myrien, who govern from the Moonspine Court in Vai'Luthra.

Honor of the Dead Decree

The Honor of the Dead Decree was the proclamation of Magnus Stoltengard, the twenty-first Jarl of Nifleheim, granting the Elegy the permanent right to maintain burial grounds, crypts, and funerary sanctums within every recognized Skarnn settlement. By it, the Elegy's holdings became sacred ground regardless of which clan's territory they stood upon.

Hourbinding

The oath-rite of House Thaldrazan, in which a vow is sealed beneath slow-hardening wax and held fulfilled only when the seal naturally cracks.

Husavrat Tar Fields

The Husavrat Tar Fields are the great deposits of tar beneath the desert of Kashar, the source of the realm's wealth. The tar-city of Morden sits over them. They are the richest tar deposits known in the world.

Icemarch

The Icemarch is the vast glacier that now covers the ruins of Sarthengar, the first city of Arkanthys. The ground it buries was once Nyvara's Mirror, a great lake at the warm heart of the Sartan oasis; when Bharûm-Drakhal and its Engine were destroyed and the oasis lost its warmth, the lake froze and the city passed beneath the ice. Fragments of Sarthengar's upper structures still break through the glacier, and expeditions out of Ravenhold venture into the Icemarch in search of relics and the ruins below, though instability and ancient arcane damage make it deadly ground.

Icethorn Peaks

The Icethorn Peaks are a cold, storm-wracked mountain range in the north of Grimhold, a frozen frontier of fractured stone and narrow passes. Bleakmarsh Fortress stands in the wetlands at their feet, and the storms that sweep down from them blind the surrounding marsh. They are a separate range from the Pale Spires, which rise far to the south above Sarthengar.

Interregnum Sigilli

An Interregnum Sigilli is a period in which a Seal lacks a clear lawful Sigillar. This may happen after disputed succession, extinction of a line, rebellion, legal challenge or delayed confirmation.

Iron Rose

The Iron Rose is the thorned silver rose that serves as the sigil of the Ordo Servitus, the imperial monastic order of service and aid. Worn upon the white robes of its brothers, it marks those sworn to shelter the poor, the wounded, and the displaced, and it is the one emblem permitted within the austere walls of Bleakmarsh Fortress.

Iron Tribunal

The supreme court of House Rhund-Khazal and the highest judicial body of Khazural, above whose seat is inscribed the creed "Weight is worship." Its Supreme Judge is Maedra Rhund-Khazal, the Silent Seal.

Jarl

The Jarl is the supreme ruler of Nifleheim and the single unifying authority over the otherwise independent Skarnn clans. The office is not strictly hereditary. A Jarl is raised through a combination of bloodline, proven legitimacy won in the Arena, and the support of the major clans, and once seated holds final authority over war, law, diplomacy, migration, famine, and the survival of the Skarnn as a whole. In practice the Jarls have been drawn overwhelmingly from Clan Grimwulf, whose seat at Tham Lorn holds the Bratnarr Obelisk recording every Jarl's name, but the title belongs to no clan by right, and an incoming Jarl keeps a solitary vigil at Chieftains' Grove before accepting the ring.

Judgment Codex

The Judgment Codex is the sealed doctrinal record of the Elegy, containing the rulings, condemnations, absolutions, and precedents recognized by the order's highest offices. Carried by the High Electress, it is opened only in the gravest formal proceedings; when the Codex is opened, a matter has already passed into serious religious judgment.

kash

kash is a Kashari naming particle meaning of or from. It links a person's name to their place of origin, as in Ressk Vorrek kash Ushk Nasseth. The word echoes the name of Kashar itself.

Kashari

The Kashari are the people of Kashar, mostly human and mortal, hardened by life in the great desert. They keep no inherited crowns and no sacred bloodlines, valuing a person by their labour and the work that outlives them. A Kashari carries a given name, a family name, a place of origin and a branch of work.

Kharandûr

Kharandûr was the highest title within the machine-city of Bharûm-Drakhal, borne only by the master engineers entrusted with direct stewardship of the Heartgear. Among a people who held creation and maintenance as sacred duties, the Kharandûr carried the gravest of them: responsibility for the engine on which the warmth of the whole oasis depended.

Knowledge before blood, containment before slaughter, victory before glory

The three principles of Drakkar, the beast-hunter order, placing understanding, control, and survival above heroics, for reckless valor is treated as a liability.

Korrun

Korrun is the Tar branch of Kashari life, the domain of the pits, refineries and tar trade centred on Morden. A Kashari who works in tar is named dur Korrun.

Kuruluk Peak

Kuruluk Peak is a mountain on the western edge of Kashar, through which the dwarves of Khazural cut a tunnel to carry tar to the coast. The great pipeline runs through it from Morden to the harbour of Joruvin. Without the passage of Kuruluk Peak the trade-city of Joruvin could not exist.

Last Breath of Oculus

The Last Breath of Oculus was the fall of the Ocularis at the end of the Godwar, when Gabriel Aurellian besieged the fortress and, the empire that sustained it already dead, forced its surrender. Every Oculus agent within was executed, ending the most feared institution of the Pantheon's rule.

Last Vigil

The Last Vigil is the Skarnn funeral watch held the night before a burial, in which the kin and clan of the dead stand around the burial stone until dawn without fire or shelter, enduring the cold in silence. It reflects the Skarnn belief that from the cold they rose, and to the cold they return.

Leaf

A leaf is a plate of oridian into which a single program of a Zarr's mind has been cut, glyph by glyph. Each leaf holds one function, such as a language, a trade or obedience. A Zarr's mind is a stack of such leaves, cut only in Zarraketh by the Deep Cut.

Lesser Domus

A Lesser Domus is a recognized noble family of lower rank than the High Domii. Lesser Domii may hold smaller lands, serve as clients of greater families, control lesser estates, or in some cases govern a Seal directly. Plural: Lesser Domii.

Living Gate

The Living Gate was the entrance to the Ocularis, a pair of sentient doors fashioned from living wood and bound through forgotten rites. Their surface shifted constantly, faces rising and vanishing beneath the bark, and they opened only to those sworn to Oculus; to all others the gate never opened. Above it was carved the Watchful Eye, the sigil of the agency.

Lonely Tower

The common name for Baraz-Darak-Sul, the last of the Lonely Towers still standing and the northernmost hold of Khazural. To speak of the Lonely Tower is to mean Sul alone, the watch that never fell.

Lonely Towers

The ancient chain of remote watch-fortresses raised across Khazural's northern and western frontier in the late Second Age to guard against the horrors beyond the mountains. All but Baraz-Darak-Sul now lie abandoned or ruined.

Lumaen and Elunaen

The twin lighthouses of Lumara, one dedicated to each moon, lit by moon-crystal.

Lumea and Elunara

The two moons of Arkanthys, central to Myrien, which keeps no fire and lives by their light.

Luminaries

The governing council of Lumara, the sea-port of Myrien, drawn from the Sylveth and Vaelari castes. The Luminaries oversee the city's trade, its rites and its observances of the two moons.

Mark of the Morningstar

The Mark of the Morningstar is the central symbol of the Elegy, the religious and funerary authority of the Skarnn. It is borne upon the vestments and ceremonial staff of the High Electress, and upon the order's temples and inquisitors, marking the authority by which the Elegy guards doctrine, judges sacrilege and heresy, and consigns the honored dead to the land.

Mask of Seidrkona

The Mask of Seidrkona is the final relic forged by the Seidr before their extinction, the vessel and catalyst through which the mantle of Seidrkona passes from one bearer to the next. It carries the accumulated memory of the Seidr, and whoever takes it up is remade into the last living Seidr, the curator of the world's natural balance.

Moon-crystal

A crystal that gives light without fire, used to light the cities of fireless Myrien and prized in the deep halls of Khazural. It is among Myrien's chief exports.

Moongate

The inner gate of Thal'Valeth, of moonstone and silver-root, said to read the truth of a traveler and to let no false name pass.

Moonspine Court

The court of the High Oracles at the foot of Myriandor in Vai'Luthra, where the Caelari judge and rule. Also called the Lunethar.

Moon-stag

Rare creatures of the Myrien forests, known from Vyssari legend and said not to have been seen for an age.

Moonstone obelisk

Tall moonstone markers set at the sacred junctions of Myrien. When both moons are full they give off a resonant tone audible only to elves.

Mourning Gate

The vast sealed threshold at the deepest reach of the Deeproots beneath Baraz-Darak-Uzul, formed of seamless stone without hinge or lock, marked by a single handprint and a script no Khazural archive can read. Once each year, on the longest night, it sounds a single deep resonance through the hold. It is the holiest and most forbidden site of the Deep Rhythm, and what lies beyond it is known to almost none.

Munus Sigilli

The Munus Sigilli is the legal obligation owed by a Seal to the Empire. It includes coin, soldiers, supplies, road maintenance, transport, grain, arms, animals and other services required by imperial law. The ruling Domus Sigillata is responsible for fulfilling the Munus Sigilli of its Seal. When the Empire formally demands this obligation, the act is called a Vocatio Sigilli. Common term: Seal Levy.

Myriandor

The World Tree of Myrien, the great moon-tree that stood at Vai'Luthra and the counterpart to Cadrien's Syrandora. It sustained the soul realm of Vallenmara for the Vyssari until Kashar burned it in the Burning of Myriandor. It now stands dead, a husk that cannot be restored, its grey roots still cradled at the Sorne by the living roots of Syrandora.

Nature Spirit

A nature spirit is a living consciousness that awakens when an ecosystem grows old, vast, and stable enough to carry awareness of itself. Each spirit is bound to a single region, a forest, a mountain range, a stretch of coast, and becomes inseparable from it, sharing one life with the land it holds together. Only a handful are believed to exist in all of Arkanthys. The death or fall of a nature spirit is a catastrophe, for without the consciousness that bound the region together the ecosystem unravels and the land collapses into blight, as the dead forest of the Needles attests.

Nifleheim Valley

Nifleheim Valley is the forested, uneven country that backs the Skarnn capital on its landward side, forming the transition between the White Border and the southern coast. It is the southern reach of Clan Grimwulf's territory and the chief inland approach to Nifleheim.

Northern Wars

The Third Age wars between Khazural and the Valiran Empire, fought along the southern mountain passes, in which the Bulwark turned back the forest empire and made it bleed for every step. Khazural was never conquered, and the wars ended in uneasy peace.

Oath-stone

A rune-stone used by House Rhund-Khazal that retains, through rune-echo, the memory of the vows and confessions spoken before it; initiates are chained to one through the night of the Binding Ceremony.

Obscura Princeps

Obscura Princeps is the title of the supreme commander of the Ordo Obscurum and the highest imperial authority upon Attox. The Princeps directs the order's war against the Fallen and answers to the Empire alone.

Oridian

Oridian is a rare pale deep-stone found near the Moon Mountains, prized because it alone can hold an inscribed glyph forever. It is the material into which the engravers of Zarraketh cut the minds of the Zarr. A finished mind-plate of oridian is called a leaf.

Pale Crown

The Pale Crown is the great divine relic forged by the god Thalor, the Bright King, from the bound essence of the weaker gods he consumed in the early Second Age. More than a symbol, it was a prison of stolen divinity and the concentrated seat of sovereignty throughout the age of the Pantheon. Gabriel Aurellian seized it from Thalor and shattered it during the Godwar, and though the Crown was broken, the wound it left, the Cinderbrand, became the foundation of Aurellian rule. Fragments of its power were later bound into the Five of Ordo Imperator.

Pale Spires

The Pale Spires are the high, mist-shrouded mountain range that rises above the ruins of Sarthengar and the frozen Icemarch. Their highest peak is crowned by Cloudwatch, the ancient imperial observatory, and at their foot, on ground that once lay within the warm Sartan oasis, stands Chieftains' Grove. Their deepest foundations are said to predate the empire that later built upon them.

Palisades

The monolithic marker among the Bulwark's ruins where the last defenders of the Third Age made their final stand, a site of pilgrimage for dwarven veterans.

Paper Blades

The Paper Blades are the enforcement arm of Heavy Coin, Ravenhold's wealth-broker guild: not soldiers but auditors, seizure officers, and contract agents who handle asset retrieval, debt enforcement, and the suppression of illegal trade through law and leverage. When coin and contract are not enough they escalate to hired Blackram steel, and their appearance usually means negotiation has failed.

Paperbrands

Paperbrands are the inspectors of the Guild of Tar Standards, who test, grade and mark the tar of Morden. They carry iron rods capped with hot seals and can condemn a batch or close a refinery with a single ruling. A ruling of the Paperbrands cannot be appealed.

Path of Ice

The Path of Ice is the rite of passage of Clan Karvandar, in which a young clan member is set alone upon the frozen sea in a small vessel and must navigate the shifting ice fields without aid. Many do not return, for the Karvandar hold that the sea itself judges who is worthy to bear the clan's name.

Pillared Rite

The coming-of-age trial of House Dornbraeth, in which a young scion must design and carve a structurally flawless pillar before adulthood. Failed works are destroyed and buried; successes are installed within the Great Hall of Measures.

Possessio Exempta

A Possessio Exempta is an exempt holding controlled by an imperial Order, office, or institution within a Seal. Such holdings are protected from local Domian taxation, seizure, inheritance and command, though they remain subject to imperial law. A Possessio Exempta may be a fortress, archive, vault, monastery, chapterhouse, sanctuary, road-station or military compound. Plural: Possessiones Exemptae.

Provisional Elevatio

A Provisional Elevatio is a temporary or contested elevation of a Domus during uncertain political conditions, such as an interregnum or regency. It grants practical rank and privileges, but may require later confirmation by the rightful imperial authority.

Ravenwood

Ravenwood is a region of Grimhold where the territories of Clan Karvandar and Clan Stoltengard meet, lying between Karvandar's western coast and the Stoltengard frontier. Its timber is prized by the shipwrights of Hafnarsvik, and it should not be confused with Ravenhold, the southeastern port-city.

Rebel's Tomb

The Rebel's Tomb is a hidden shrine in the deep desert of Kashar, kept by the Tesk Vaskarr in secret worship of Drax, the slain god of defiance. The tomb is empty, for Drax fell far away at Chieftains' Grove and no body was ever laid in it. To the faithful the emptiness is the point, a sign that defiance was never buried.

Red Rite

The funerary rite of House Zarak-Vorr, in which a drop of the honored dead's blood is sealed within a ruby and mounted in regalia or memorial reliquaries as a token of preserved legacy.

Red Robes

The Red Robes are the mage-custodians of Altarra Tower, its security and the arm that retrieves dangerous relics and unbound magic. They enforce the Tower's authority beyond its walls and answer to its Archmage and the Seat of Five.

Revocatio Sigilli

Revocatio Sigilli is the formal revocation of a Seal from a Domus. It is one of the most severe imperial punishments and may occur after treason, rebellion, extinction, unlawful war, catastrophic failure of duty or repeated Defectio Muneris.

Roil

The Roil is the unformed arcane chaos from which reality first separated, and the deep wellspring from which all magic continues to flow. It existed before the world had shape, in the age of the Creators, and after their withdrawal it sank into the lower layers of reality rather than vanishing. Every act of spellcraft in Arkanthys draws upon the Roil, knowingly or not, and the strength of a mage is measured by their connection to it; Altarra Tower's Arcana Matrix detects new magic precisely by sensing fluctuations in a person's link to the Roil.

Runelaw

The codified law of Khazural, rooted in rune-inscribed statute, of which the High King is the final interpreter.

Rune-Sentinels

Automaton constructs that guard Baraz-Kronn, identifying individuals through glyph-resonance. They patrol the Bronze Line and the inner wards, and no outsider passes them without sanction.

Sael

The river that forms the northern border between Myrien and Khazural, at whose mouth stands Myr'Sael.

Saevryn

The caste system of Myrien. Every Vyssari is born into one of four castes and cannot rise above it, and crossing castes is held to violate the natural order. The four are the Thalanir, Sylveth, Caelari and Vaelari.

Salt Oath

The Salt Oath is the vow sworn by Karvandar warriors before any major voyage or battle, their weapons dipped in seawater as they pledge to return with honor or not at all. To break a Salt Oath is among the gravest disgraces in Karvandar culture.

Savrun

Savrun is the Water branch of Kashari life, the domain of the cisterns, aquifers and water-law centred on Ushk Nasseth. A Kashari who works in water is named dur Savrun.

Seal

A Seal is a recognized territorial holding within the Aurellian Empire. A Seal may be owned and governed by a noble Domus, retained directly by the Empire, or contain exempt holdings belonging to imperial institutions or Orders. In noble territory, a Seal is hereditary property of its ruling Domus Sigillata.

Seat

A Seat is the primary ruling center of a Seal. It may be a city, fortress, palace, old town, fortified estate, or administrative capital from which the Seal is governed. A Seat is not the same as a Seal. The Seal is the territory; the Seat is the place from which authority is exercised.

Sector

A Sector is one of the lettered divisions by which the Ordo Obscurum maps and holds Attox, each split further by number, as in Sector A-XI. The system runs from the held sectors of the south to the unclaimed reaches of the lost north.

Sennari

The inborn psionic sense of the elves, which lets them speak mind to mind without words and hear tones no other people can.

Sennari Circle

The ground at Thal'Valeth where young Thalanir are trained in arms and in sennari.

Sent to the Stonebound

A dwarven expression used in warning, fear, or grim humor, invoking the silent order that guards what must remain sealed.

Shape, or be shaped

The creed of House Dornbraeth, teaching that those unwilling to impose order upon the world will be shaped by stronger hands.

Shard of Pyrrhex

The Shard of Pyrrhex is a crystalline fragment of the Creator Pyrrhex, the Principle of Transformation, whose primordial fire still smolders wherever the young world was broken open. Older than the gods themselves, it was not made but merely harnessed by the Pantheon, who bound it into a vast engine to keep their chosen heartland warm against the frozen world around it. The dwarves of Bharûm-Drakhal later found the Engine through the Deeproots and raised their machine-city around it; when the Shard was shattered during the Godwar, the oasis froze and Sarthengar passed beneath the Icemarch.

Shell of Stars

The moonstone amphitheater at the heart of Lumara where travelers are received and festivals are held.

Shield-Symmetry

The council of five Thalanir that governs Thal'Valeth.

Sigillar

A Sigillar is the current head of a Domus Sigillata and the lawful ruler of its Seal. The Sigillar governs the Seal, manages its obligations, represents the Domus in imperial matters, and is responsible for fulfilling the Seal’s duties to the Empire.

Sigillum Imperii

A Sigillum Imperii is a Seal owned and governed directly by the Aurellian Empire rather than by a noble Domus. Such territories are usually too important, strategic, profitable, symbolic, or dangerous to be entrusted to hereditary noble ownership. Capitals, imperial roads, major vaults, military corridors, treasury districts, and arcane institutions may be held as Sigilla Imperii. Plural: Sigilla Imperii. Common term: Crown Seal.

Silver-root

A grown elven material worked into weapons, fittings and building without need of fire.

Sky Below

The artificial firmament of Baraz-Kronn: the vaulted ceiling of the capital's central chamber, inlaid with diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, and other gemstones arranged to mirror the surface constellations, lighting the heart of a city no true sky reaches.

Skybloom

A district of Syr'Kareth grown into the trunk or limbs of Syrandora, each kept by one of the Twelve Harmonies and shaped to the rapture it lives by. Each Skybloom is also a threshold, the place where its Harmony's rite of crossing into Aurenmara is performed.

Solari

The amber sap of Syrandora, the sun World Tree of Cadrien. Across Arkanthys it is prized as a drug, and among the Ambrai it runs in the veins in place of blood and is the source of their soul-walking.

Solenaar

The transformed dead of Cadrien, Ambrai souls that have passed into Aurenmara and become drifting beings of amber soul-light. Each remains itself yet all share one consciousness. All are part of Syra.

Solenvoss

The Ambrai title for the Voice of Syra, the chosen prophet through whom the Empress Syra speaks to the living. A Solenvoss is the only half-Solenaar to walk the physical world, marked by veined amber light and drawn slowly across the years into their Syr'Solenar.

Solvarr

Solvarr is the Trade branch of Kashari life, the domain of the merchants, harbours and contracts centred on Joruvin. A Kashari who works in trade is named dur Solvarr.

Sorne

The great waterfall on the border between Myrien and Cadrien, over which the shared city of Vai'Sorne and Syr'Sorne stands.

Soul Shards

Soul shards are the crystalline prisons into which Oculus sealed the souls of its most dangerous enemies, the body destroyed once the soul had been drawn out by ritual. First made for Cassandra Raven, the First Murderer, the method was reserved for the empire's gravest threats, and thousands of shards were stored in the Soul Vaults beneath the Ocularis, where rumor says the prisoners within still whisper in the dark.

Soul-walking

The gift unique to the Ambrai, granted by the Solari in their veins, that lets them loose the soul from the body. A soul-walker may move unseen through the physical world or cross into the soul realm of Aurenmara.

Spear-Symmetry

The council of marshals that commands Thal'Kosyr and the southern front against Kashar.

Spirit-walking

The Ambrai gift of parting the soul from the body at will, alone among the peoples of Arkanthys. The freed soul roams while the body lies dormant, and it cannot take another body or outlive its own.

Stalakk

Stalakk is the hunting spear of Sigrid Stoltengard, built for both throwing and close combat and bearing the antler emblem of her clan. It is modified for the harsh north, with a reinforced shaft, weighted balance, and bindings suited to gloved hands.

Starstone

Starstone is the god-made stone from which the Celestial Gate of Attox was raised. It is found nowhere else in the world and is bound to the works of the gods alone.

Starwalk and Voidwalk

The two bridges of Thal'Valeth, the Starwalk for Vyssari of elven blood and the Voidwalk for everyone else.

Stonebound

The monastic order of the Deep Rhythm, drawn overwhelmingly from the Durazhul, sworn to silence, restraint, and the guarding of the deepest thresholds of the Deeproots. From their seat at Baraz-Darak-Uzul they keep eternal watch over the Mourning Gate, while the rare Khazal among them keep the Hammer Verses within the Elderspine.

Stone-Echoing

The ritual of House Zarak-Vorr in which carved stone is struck in measured rhythm to symbolically awaken the memory held within the earth.

Stone Return

The Stone Return is the Durazhul understanding of death. The Deep Dwarves do not perish of age but slowly petrify, flesh and bone hardening wholly into stone until movement ceases. They regard this not as decay but as the final return of the body to the Deep Rhythm, and their lithified dead are left where they fall or set into the architecture of their colonies as permanent fixtures and shrines.

Stone-Speech

The secret symbolic language of House Dornbraeth, a code of chisel-marks and micro-runes embedded within their structures and readable only by true Dornbraeth artisans.

Subjugation of the Skarnn

The Subjugation of the Skarnn was the prolonged imperial campaign of the early Third Age, beginning around 3A 31 amid the Fracturing of the Sartan Order, in which the Sartan Empire moved against the Skarnn strongholds of Grimhold. Over generations imperial forces burned or emptied settlements, executed or took hostage tribal leaders, dismantled sacred sites, and outlawed the rites of ancestry and land. The Skarnn remembered these campaigns as subjugation while imperial records called them pacification, a difference that would shape every age that followed. Only Stoltengard Keep endured unbroken, and the massacre called the Day the Ravens Blocked the Sun belongs to this period.

Sunevar

The Ambrai title for the Voice of the Sorne, the one chosen by all Twelve Harmonies to keep Cadrien's bond with its dying sister-realm of Myrien. The Sunevar lives at Syr'Sorne and tends the oldest friendship in the world.

Sword of the Voice

The Sword of the Voice is the commander of the Legia Martyris, the holy legion of the Scivian Ecclesia. The office answers to the Voice of the War and leads the faith's armies against the Empire.

Sylvandor

The span of living root at the Sorne falls, where the roots of Myriandor and Syrandora rise and intertwine above the water, joining the two elven realms. It is the most sacred ground of Myrien and Cadrien both. Since the Burning of Myriandor its Myrien half has stood dead, held in place by Syrandora's living roots from the Cadrien side.

Sylveth

The Myrien caste of nature-keepers, who tend the living world. Their power shapes existing life but cannot create from nothing or regrow a World Tree.

Syra

Empress Syra, the living sovereign of Aurenmara and the form Syrandora takes within the soul realm. The tree and the empress are one being with two faces. All the dead of Cadrien are part of her.

Syrandora

The living amber sun World Tree at the heart of Cadrien and the source of the realm's life. It weeps the sap Solari, projects the soul realm of Aurenmara and takes the form of Empress Syra within it.

Syr'Kareth

The capital and greatest city of Cadrien, grown into the trunk and limbs of Syrandora. A vertical city of amber wood lit by Solari, it is ordered into the twelve Skyblooms of the Harmonies and known as a city of twelve rhythms.

Syr'Solenar

The willing passage by which a dying Ambrai surrenders the body and crosses into Aurenmara to remain among the Solenaar. An Ambrai who dies without it, by murder or sudden death, never reaches Syra and is lost.

Tar

Tar is the black lifeblood of Kashar, a liquid drawn from deep veins beneath the desert. Inert until refined, it serves as binding agent, medicine, sun-ointment and power source. It is the foundation of the realm's wealth. It is graded and marked by the Guild of Tar Standards before it may be sold.

Tar Barons

The Tar Barons were the warlords who ruled Kashar in the age before the four cities, each holding a stretch of the tar fields by force. They were broken and absorbed as the cities rose. The conglomerates of Morden trace their origins to the companies of that era.

Thalanir

The Binders

The Binders is the informal name for the arcanists of the Ordo Obscurum. Their sorcery seals the horrors of Attox and holds the Celestial Gate in its long sleep.

The Crossing

The art of the Aurenkaar, granted by Syra: the ability to leave the body and strike from within Aurenmara into the physical world, then return in the space of a heartbeat. Mastering it takes decades. A mistimed return can strand the soul beyond any recovery, lost as the wrongly dead are lost.

The Immortal

The Immortal is the title under which Emeric Scivia is worshipped by the Scivian Ecclesia, both as a martyr and as a god. It is the name most often used for him across Rimefang.

The Meld

The Meld is the joining of minds between a Fenni and its rider, made once and holding for life. Through it the two think and see as one, drawing the rider into the shared awareness of the herd.

The Pantheon

The Pantheon was the order of gods who ruled Arkanthys before the Empire, chief among them Thalor the Bright King. They were cast down in the Godwar. Their worship has been forbidden across the Empire ever since, so that the dead gods can find no road back to power.

The Rise

The catastrophic transformation during the Godwar when Syrandora surged upward, lifting and shattering the Cadrian Vale and drowning much of it beneath the new Cadrian Sea. It gave Cadrien its towering sky-tree form.

The Tower Must Never Fall

The unchanging creed of the Frostguard, sworn at Baraz-Darak-Sul against the threats beyond the northern frontier.

The Unbound

The Unbound were the enforcers of the old divine order, who hunted and punished unsanctioned power in the age of the Pantheon. Their execution of the inventor Rhea Auric was the act that drove Winrey Auric to rebellion and helped light the Godwar.

Threat Class

Threat Class is the Ordo Obscurum's system for ranking the Fallen by the danger they pose, from the common Class I to the rare and terrible Class IV. Each catalogued horror also bears a code such as S-01, B-01 or X-10.

Threefold Principle of Weight, Flame, and Fire

The Threefold Principle of Weight, Flame, and Fire was the foundational engineering philosophy of Bharûm-Drakhal. Weight governed structural stability, pressure, and gravitational control; Flame governed energy transformation, thermal transfer, and industrial production; and Fire represented animation, destruction, and the sustaining force of creation itself.

The public creed of House Brimgaruun, framing trade and regulated exchange as the foundation of Khazural's prosperity.

Tide of Two Faces

The Tide of Two Faces is a Clan Vossk ritual performed at the spring thaw, in which participants carve two mirrored masks from driftwood, one for the face shown to the world and one for the truths kept hidden beneath it. The rite expresses the Vossk belief that wisdom lies not in revealing all things but in knowing what must remain concealed, and it echoes the twin-mask sigil of the clan itself.

Trial of Char

The ancient ordeal of House Thaldrazan that scars its survivors and plates them in ceremonial brass; Thorek Thaldrazan, the Warchief of Cinders, bears its marks.

Trial of the White Border

The Trial of the White Border is the rite of adulthood of Clan Grimwulf. Upon reaching maturity, a youth is sent alone into the White Border and must survive its wilderness unaided before returning home. Success is taken as proof of strength, self-reliance, and worthiness to serve the clan; of failure, little is said.

Triumvirate of Keepers

The council of three senior Stonebound who govern Baraz-Darak-Uzul: the Gate-Keeper, who oversees all passage into the Deeproots; the Oath-Keeper, who preserves the record of vows and obligations; and the Rune-Keeper, the order's highest interpreter of the Deep Rhythm, who governs the deepest vaults and is never seen unmasked. Each is chosen by ritual selection rather than birth or election.

Upon the Vund

The dwarven formula for the gravest of oaths, sworn upon the Dûrvund itself. An oath sworn upon the Vund is held unbreakable, and to break one is to become Vundrekk.

Vaelari

The Myrien caste of makers and lorekeepers, who handle craft, record and trade.

Valira

The empire that united Myrien and Cadrien under a single crown from 3A 1981 until its fracture in 3A 8012.

Vallenmara

The lost soul realm of Myrien, the realm beyond death that the moon World Tree Myriandor once opened for the Vyssari. Reached through the tree by the light of the two moons rather than by soul-walking, it received the Vyssari dead until the Burning of Myriandor destroyed both the tree and the realm, unmaking every soul within. It was the Myrien counterpart to Cadrien's Aurenmara.

The archives and crypt-vaults of House Zarak-Vorr, holding relics, bones, bloodstones, and memorial records spanning the history of Khazural.

Vedrun

Vedrun is the Engineering branch of Kashari life, the domain of the Zarr-craft and the works centred on Zarraketh. A Kashari who works in engineering is named dur Vedrun.

Velaine

The elven line that founded Valira under Urus and ended it under Calan, bookending the empire across six thousand years.

Verge

The eastern district of Thal'Valeth where outsiders are permitted to live and trade.

Vocatio Sigilli

Vocatio Sigilli is the formal imperial demand that a Seal render the Munus Sigilli it owes. It names what is required and by when, whether coin, soldiers, grain, arms, animals or labour. A Seal that fails to answer a Vocatio commits Defectio Muneris.

Voice of the Council

The leader of the Warden-Guild of Flame & Stone and spokesman of Zulfbar's Council of Guilds, who represents the trade-city in dealings with Baraz-Kronn and foreign powers. Though the office speaks for a nominally independent council, in practice it operates within the dominant influence of House Brimgaruun. The current Voice is Lady Thorra Gorek.

Vundbal

One who is sworn into the Dûrvund, the Stone Pact. To be Vundbal is to be counted a true dwarf of Khazural, held within the realm's covenant. From vund, a sworn binding, and the suffix -bal, held within.

Vundrekk

One who has broken the Dûrvund, the Stone Pact. The gravest disgrace among the Khazal, a charge few survive socially and none forget. From vund, a sworn binding, and the suffix -rekk, broken or sundered.

Vyssari

The moon-touched elves of Myrien, the people once bound to the World Tree Myriandor. Mortal, silver-hued and speaking mind to mind through sennari, they are ordered by the rigid castes of the Saevryn and keep no fire. Since the Burning of Myriandor destroyed their soul realm of Vallenmara, they have been a severed and slowly fading people. They are the kin of Cadrien's sun-touched Ambrai.

Walk of Succession

The Walk of Succession is the rite performed by every incoming Jarl of Nifleheim, who walks alone and in silence from the outer boundary of Chieftains' Grove to the Stonefather's Pillar, acknowledging the burden of rule and the judgment of those who ruled before. Some keep a longer vigil; Jarl Barl Grimwulf spent three days alone in the Grove before accepting the ring.

Warden

The Thalanir commander who holds a Myrien border city such as Myr'Sael or Thal'Kosyr, answering to Vai'Luthra but trusted to act alone.

Warden-Captain

The commander of the Frostguard and master of Baraz-Darak-Sul, last of the Lonely Towers. Unlike most dwarven commands the office is martial rather than political, and is won by formal challenge as much as by appointment. The current Warden-Captain is Dravik Makaar, the Still Flame.

Warden of Syrandora

The commander of the Aurenkaar, first and greatest among them. The Warden judges what threatens Cadrien and decides when the order goes to war, answering only to the mandate the Twelve have given it. It is a distinct office from the Myrien wardens who hold the border cities.

The creed of House Thaldrazan, that hardship is not defeat but the means of advance.

Weight Doors

The Weight Doors were the monumental bronze gates that sealed Bharûm-Drakhal, held shut by magnetic polarity generated by an internal lodestone matrix. When the Heartgear failed, the magnetic systems locked permanently, sealing the city beyond opening. Scholars believe only an exact magnetic resonance matching the original frequency could part them again, a theory revived by the discovery of Winrey Auric's meteorite.

Weight is worship

The creed of House Rhund-Khazal, inscribed above the Iron Tribunal, holding that to bear burden and honor obligation is the highest devotion.

Weightkeeper's Book

The hidden ledger of House Rhund-Khazal, holding the gravest blood-debts, secret oaths, and political obligations owed throughout Khazural.

What is not seen cannot be fought

The founding doctrine of the Guild of Hollow Eyes, Ravenhold's intelligence network, capturing their conviction that information unseen and unanticipated is the deadliest weapon of all.

The creed of House Zarak-Vorr, that memory is the only true survival.

White Border

The White Border is the dangerous, sacred frontier of northern Grimhold, a stretch of brutal wilderness that serves the Skarnn at once as proving ground and holy ground. It is revered as the domain of Fenrir, the Nature Spirit of Balance, and the clans contest it constantly. The Grimwulf rite of adulthood, the Trial of the White Border, requires a youth to survive it alone, and Clan Stoltengard built its name patrolling it.

White Forest

The White Forest is the last untouched primordial woodland in Grimhold, held sacred by the Skarnn and forbidden to permanent settlement, logging, or mining. It is guarded by Algar the White Wolf, the Archdruid, recognized as its sole custodian, whose word concerning it even the Jarl will not overrule. Hunting within its bounds is permitted only under the conditions Algar sets.

White Graveyard

The White Graveyard is a frozen region marking the far northern reach of Clan Grimwulf's territory in Grimhold, the northern bound of the Grimwulf lands that stretch south toward the Nifleheim Valley.

White Sea

The White Sea is the frozen western sea of Grimhold, a treacherous expanse of ice floes, shifting currents, and sudden storms. It is the domain of Clan Karvandar, the only people to master its waters, whose seat at Hafnarsvik stands alone upon its far western coast. The legendary sea-lord Drengr Karvandar was lost to it.

Winter Vigil

The Winter Vigil is the rite of adulthood of Clan Stoltengard, in which an initiate must stand alone in the Antler Hills through an entire winter night without fire or shelter, enduring the cold, the isolation, and the unseen terrors of the wild without abandoning the post. Survival proves worthiness; failure is dishonorable but not ruinous, and those who falter are expected to attempt the rite again until they succeed.

Wolf Guard

The Wolf Guard is the elite household guard of Clan Grimwulf and, through the Jarl drawn from that clan, the last line of defense of Nifleheim itself. Stationed at the Long Hall in Tham Lorn, they answer to the Jarl alone.

Wordbound

The rarest and most feared of the Stonebound, living vessels of truths, names, and oaths too dangerous to commit to writing. Through lifelong silence and binding they grow so attuned to the Deep Rhythm that, it is said, when they speak even stone listens. Not even the Triumvirate of Keepers may command them to speak.

Wordless

The newest initiates of the Frostguard, who wear plain black steel and keep silence until they survive their first full year of service, after which they carve their first Word into their armor. Thereafter each Frostguard carves a single new Word each year, a private vow known only to them.

World Tree

The colossal sacred trees from which elven myth holds the first elves were born. Myrien's was Myriandor and Cadrien's is Syrandora, each covered in its own article.

Zarr

The Zarr are soulless constructs made only in Zarraketh, given body and motion by tar and a mind by glyphs cut into oridian. They labour across Kashar as workers, servants and soldiers. They possess no soul and no will beyond the leaves cut for them. They take their name from the city that makes them.
