About the Bazaar

The Bazaar is the great free-port of the far southern seas, the most lawless place in all the world. It is both an island and the city upon it, though the island is going under. Slowly and surely the land sinks into the sea, and long ago the Bazaar stopped depending on it. Over generations its people built out onto the water, lashing wrecked ships and hulls and platforms into a vast floating sprawl. Today the city rides the waves while the island drowns beneath it, and no longer cares.

It is free because no one can reach it. The Bazaar lies far to the south, across treacherous and ill-charted seas, with the burning land of Kethra barring the way south by land. The Empire wanted these rich isles once and spent twenty years in the Southern War trying to take them. It never did. In that unreachable place the Bazaar grew up beyond the grasp of every power that might have ruled it.

About the Bazaar

Geography

The Drowning Isle of the Free

A half-drowned island lashed together by ship and rope, where outcasts, traders and pirates built a city that floats where the land failed. Here there is no law, only the sea and whoever is standing next to you.

01

The Sinking Isle

Once a fertile island ringed by reefs, now half-submerged and slipping beneath the tides. Ancient ruins and drowned streets lie just below the waves, and each year the water climbs a little higher up what remains. The Bazaar long ago stopped depending on the land, and watches it go under without concern.

02

The Floating City

A sprawling lattice of ships, rafts and platforms bound by rope and necessity, grown out over the water around the drowning isle. Markets, taverns and shrines crowd every channel and gangway. The whole tangle is lashed together as one great floating mass, every hull tied to the next, so that the city rides the sea while the island beneath it drowns.

03

The Treacherous Seas

Storm-wracked and reef-choked, the southern ocean swallows the careless. Currents shift like temper, and few who vanish here are ever found. These waters are the Bazaar's true wall, an ill-charted expanse that no fleet can cross without knowing it well. What keeps the Bazaar unreachable is also what keeps it free.

04

Beyond Kethra

Far to the south lies the burning coast of Kethra, a land of red stone, salt flats and scorching winds that no army has ever conquered. It bars the way south by land, and beyond it lies only endless sea and no empire's reach. The Empire spent twenty years in the Southern War trying to pass it and never did.

People

Those Who Wash Up Here

The Bazaar has no citizens, only those who came to it. Every soul fled something or hunts something. Titles mean little and pasts matter less. Here no one asks who you were before.

01

The Pirates

They come on stolen winds and seized waves, pirates of every flag and none, bound by plunder and profit. They sail out from the floating docks to raid the shipping lanes of the south and return to sell what they take. The sea is their road, the Bazaar their harbour.

02

The Traders and Smugglers

Merchants, hucksters, fences and fixers, they trade in fortune and forbidden things. They move goods and secrets through a web of favours, debts and quiet hands. Anything that anyone will pay for changes hands in their markets, and the only question ever asked is the price.

03

The Slavers

In the shadowed decks where no sun reaches, lives are weighed like cargo. Captives taken in raids or bought from distant lands are sold on the platforms without shame or hindrance. It is the darkest face of a place that calls itself free.

04

The Exiles and Outcasts

Cast out by crowns and curses, they find shelter in the cracks between the decks. Fugitives, deserters and the disgraced, they come with wary eyes and stories they do not tell. In the Bazaar no one asks what they were before, and that silence is the whole reason they came.

05

The Free

They answer to none and owe to no flag. Dreamers, wanderers and seekers of fortune and meaning, they came for the freedom itself. To them the Bazaar is no den of thieves at the edge of the world. It is the one corner of it where a person may truly be free.
